How to Read a Nutrition Label Like a Pro

Reading nutrition label on food

Nutrition labels can feel confusing — but once you understand the basics, they become a powerful tool for making healthier choices.

1. Serving Size

This is the most important starting point. All the numbers on the label are based on this serving size. If you eat more than the listed serving, you’re consuming more calories and nutrients.

2. Calories

Calories show how much energy you get from a serving. Track them based on your daily needs — around 2000 calories per day for the average adult, but this varies.

3. Nutrients to Limit

  • Saturated fat & trans fat: Limit these to protect your heart.
  • Sodium: High salt intake can increase blood pressure.
  • Added sugars: Too much leads to weight gain and fatigue.

4. Nutrients to Focus On

  • Fiber: Helps digestion and keeps you full.
  • Protein: Essential for muscles and repair.
  • Vitamins & minerals: Boost immunity and energy.

5. % Daily Value (%DV)

This shows how much of a nutrient a serving contributes to your daily diet. As a rule of thumb:

  • 5% DV or less: Low
  • 20% DV or more: High
Quick Tip: Choose foods with low saturated fat, sodium, and sugar — but high in fiber, vitamins, and protein.
